When looking at stringed instruments like violins and cellos, you will be faced with the choice of buying or renting. This guide will help you make that choice. I'm giving general advice that can be applied worldwide and specific recommendations tailored to Greater Baton Rouge area in Louisiana, where I do most of my teaching. Acquiring a violin, fiddle, viola, cello, or bass is best done in consultation with a trusted expert, preferably your teacher. Avoid cheap instruments, even for beginners. Especially for beginners! Cheap instruments have *problems* that make them difficult and unsatisfying to play. Novices may think they don't like playing fiddle, when actually it's their specific instrument that's the problem. Since this is the case, you may be inclined to rent an instrument instead of buying. When you rent, there's no long-term commitment. You also don’t have to worry about resale.
